Carolyn attended the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1991 with an Honours degree with dual majors in psychology and criminology. She then moved to London, Ontario where she attended the University of Western Ontario (now “Western”) and graduated in 1995 with an L.L.B.. After completing her articles with Cohen, HIghley, Vogel and Dawn (now Cohen HIghley LLP), she attended the Bar Admission course and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1997. Carolyn is proud to say that she articled for the now Mr. Justice Fletcher Dawson of the Superior Court of Justice and Madame Justice Jeanine LeRoy of the Ontario Court of Justice. 

Carolyn has practiced exclusively criminal law her entire career. She was a defense lawyer from 1997 until 2013 in London, Ontario. She initially worked with Paul Carter, Criminal Lawyers until 2004 when she went out on her own. In 2012 she had a professional corporation, Carolyn Ayre Criminal Law.   

In 2013 Carolyn sold her practice and spent 10 months living and working in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Upon returning from Mexico, Carolyn is now with Alberta Justice as a Crown Prosecutor in Red Deer, Alberta. 

Carolyn had a very large and diverse practice. She represented clients before the Ontario Court of Justice, Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Review Board. She has extensive knowledge of the Mental Health provisions in the Criminal Code as well as the Gladue principles.  

Carolyn developed and was known for her strong advocacy and communication in the courtroom. She excelled and was known for her cross-examination skills. She has taught trial advocacy at the University of Western Ontario (now “Western”) and the criminal section of the Bar Admission Course (as It then was) for the Law Society of Upper Canada. She has judged moot competitions. 

Carolyn has strong research and writing skills. She was the researcher for an external moot team during her time at law school. She has drafted over 100 factums. As a result of the strength of her drafting skills, many of those matters did not proceed to trial. She has also argued many of those factums, thereby developing the skill of what to argue and not argue when referring to factums.
